Summer Jazz Workshop
(Ages 12 - 18)
July 6th - 10th, 2026; 9am - 4pm
A Day at the Workshop…
This week-long intensive class for intermediate and above musicians aged 12 and up focuses on honing skills for improvisation and small group playing. Participants will explore the world of jazz improvisation and ensemble playing as they develop their abilities to hear jazz, learn basic scales and chords, build a jazz vocabulary for improvisation, and become familiar with harmonic devices to give them the keys to a new world of musical self-expression. Led by veteran jazz musician and BMS Jazz Department head, Jeff Newell, the course will consist of listening to, watching videos of, and discussing classic jazz performances - in addition to hours of playing jazz. The week also includes daily master classes with additional BMS Jazz Faculty members and will culminate in a performance within the community (TBD) - providing valuable experience and confidence building.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to assist young musicians as they explore and engage with the art of jazz improvisation. It also gives me great joy to watch them come together through music and find their place in the BMS Jazz Community.”
~ Jeff Newell - BMS Jazz Dept. Chair and Director of BMS Jazz Workshop
