Brooklyn Music School announced that it will present a Valentine's Day Concert titled Seasons of Love at the BMS Theater on Saturday, February 13th from 5-7 p.m.

Brooklyn Music School announced that it will present a Valentine's Day Concert titled Seasons of Love at the BMS Theater on Saturday, February 13th from 5-7 p.m.

This celebration of the power of love is a perfect way to warm up your heart in advance of Valentine's day. Love at first sight, head-over-heels love, unrequited love, love gone wrong, undying love, measureless love, and feverish love: all these permutations of the mysterious power of love will be covered by BMS vocalists.

"Over the centuries and across nearly all musical traditions, the theme of love often inspires the greatest vocal performances given that it is universal to the human experience," said Lina Tetriani, Chair of BMS Voice Department. "We hope to provide a selection of songs that will broaden the musical horizons of our audience."

The performance is appropriate for couples, families, and even first dates. So come on down to the Brooklyn Music School. Admission is $5.

15th Annual MLK Jr. Concert & Celebration

Presenting our 15th Annual Martin Luther King Concert & Celebration featuring a range of musical and dance performances that celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.

On Saturday, January 16th, 2016 the Brooklyn Music School will present our 15th Annual Martin Luther King Concert & Celebration, presenting a range of musical and dance performances that celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and honor those whose accomplishments and contributions advance the causes of human dignity and equality that he fought and died for.

“Brooklyn Music School is all about bringing people together and celebrating the rich mixture of heritages and cultural traditions that make both Brooklyn such a creative and influential community,” said BMS Executive Director, Piruz Partow. “Especially during this time of renewed concerns about equitable treatment of all Americans, no matter what their skin color or economic circumstances, the legacy of Dr. King continues to inspire us as musicians, students, parents, and citizens. What better way to show our solidarity, than to gather together for an evening of soul-rousing music and performance?”

MLK Music & Dance Performances

The concert will feature a variety of musical styles that reflect the spirit, ideas, and legacy of Dr. King, who once said: “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

 The event will include:

  • The Arts Reaching Youth Choir singing “I’m Heading to the Promised Land”
  • The Choir on Fire and BMS Rock Band performing “One Love,” “What’s Going On,” and “Glory”
  • Djembe drummers
  • Myea Patterson singing the spiritual “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)”

In addition, there will be a performance by the BMS Jazz Band, songs by Billie Holiday, and Afro-Cuban and hip-hop dance numbers.

Honoring Exceptional Contribution of Shawn Dove

In addition to music and performing arts, BMS will also honor those who through their own lives have carried to the torch of Dr. King’s vision into the present day. This year’s honoree is Shawn Dove, CEO of Campaign for Black Male Achievement,  a national membership network that seeks to ensure the growth, sustainability, and impact of leaders and organizations committed to improving the life outcomes of black men and boys.

Founded via George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement is a multi-issue, cross-fund strategy to address black men and boys' exclusion from economic, social, educational, and political life in the United States. The campaign responds to a growing body of research that reveals the intensification of black males' negative life outcomes, and works to reduce incarceration, promote racial justice, and support youth engagement and leadership development.

“Shawn’s work in areas across the arts, racial justice, economic opportunity, and leadership development takes the legacy of Dr. King forward into our era in a bold and imaginative way,” said Crocker Coulson, trustee of BMS. “The Board of Trustees is honored to recognize his achievement at this event which is very special to many in our surrounding communities of Fort Greene and beyond.”

Prior to leading CBMA, Mr. Dove served as Creative Communities Director for the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts where he led and managed the start-up of a youth development, arts education and community building strategy that partnered community schools of the arts and public housing communities in 20 U.S. cities, and was vice president of the MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership.

The Concert and Ceremony will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, January 16th 2016 at the Brooklyn Music School Theater at 126 St Felix Street, Brooklyn NY 11217 (between Lafayette Ave & Hanson Place). Admission is $5 with a “pay what you can option.”

The Brooklyn Music School will be holding a joint concert with the visiting Conservatoire Jean Lenain Auvelais (CJLA) of Belgium in the BMS Theater at 126 St Felix Street in Brooklyn on Thursday, November 5th at 5:30 p.m.

Join us for a collaboration in the spirit of international friendship showcasing the talents of both schools with a program that includes combined orchestra, vocal duets, mixed jazz, dance, and a rock band. The event is free to attend.

The concert is part of a broader exchange program between the two schools. While the students from CJLA are in New York City they will also be participating in other joint events with BMS students, including musical performances at the New York City Marathon and the Fort Greene Park Halloween Festival, as well as outings to the Phantom of the Opera, NY Islanders, NY Philharmonic, and the Fatcat Jazz Club.

The program builds on a positive trans-Atlantic creative exchange between the two community music schools. Last April, BMS students travelled to Belgium and France with CJLA, including a visit to the Royal Opera House where the Phantom of the Opera story is set. The exchange was even featured on Belgian TV and the segment can be viewed at http://www.canalc.be/cetait-brooklyn-a-sambreville/

BMS executive director Piruz Partow commented: “As a cutting edge community performing arts school of the 21st century, BMS believes that these cultural exchanges are key to expanding students' horizons and allowing them to not only see the world, but collaborate with music students from other cultures.”

Dani Mari
An avid fan of Billie Holiday and Mazzy Star, Dani Mari was born to sing. Her music is fueled by personal narratives embedded in the craft of classic story telling and the emotional insight of a most unlikely “old soul”. Audiences across the United States and throughout Europe have gravitated toward her beautifully haunting voice and the simplistic elegance of her lyrics which transcend our current snap shot of popular music. She has been featured on NPR, BBC, MTV, WXPN (including the Gene Shay Folk Show on WXPN) and Brooklyn Vegan and has collaborated with FEAR CLUB from Paris, Sun Glitters from Luxembourg, Brooklyn Shanti and was formally in the dreampop duo, Lockets. She has performed at SXSW, CMJ, The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Musikfest and many other festivals and venues across the world. In addition she has performed with acts such as Sylvan Esso, St. Lucia, Mr Twin Sister, Exitmusic, Widowspeak, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Mates of State, Patti Smith, Edward Sharp & the Magnetic Zeros, Of Montreal and more. With nothing more than her instrument and stories of her life experience, her songs merely hint at Dani Mari’s desire to transport listeners the world over to an era of nostalgia which exists within the depths of her soul.

Dani Mari is also the founder of Female Frequency (a musical collaboration created entirely by women), Brookladelphia (curated live events with the idea of encouraging creativity, community and collaboration of the arts in multiple locations) and Pay For Music Day (Pay for Music Day is Every Day. Buy a song. Pass it along. Support Your Artists).

-“Dani Mari’s angelic vocal sweeps over its accompaniment, sometimes mildly distorted in its layers it adds a wash of mystery.” - The 405

“Give a lot of credit to Dani Mari’s vocals, soft enough to evoke that whimsical innocence and strong enough to stand out against the sky-sized, sun-drenched melody.” - A Cosmic Soundscape

-“Dani Mari’s narrative, story-like songs are ear-catching and unusual to hear in this day and age.” - That Mag

-“Dani Mari can hold her own with the best indie/folk singers.” - The Swollen Fox

Will Hanza
"Bursting with musical and spiritual energy, lush soundscapes, and riveting musicianship... The driving force is his own restless, intertwined musical and spiritual energy... with haunting vocals in the manner of early Pink Floyd and King Crimson." Currently guitarist for Kalen & The Sky Thieves. Also, Owl & Wolf and other projects.

Owl and Wolf
Folktress Dani Mari has combined forces with the experimental sounds of Will Hanza. Their union infuses influences from americana, blues and folk music. The mixture of acoustic instruments with sultry melodies and harmonies create a sound that can be described as Dark Folk. The duo is set to release more music in the upcoming year.

They have been featured on WXPN’s The Key & The Swollen Fox

Vatan
Vatan, or "homeland" in Persian, is a group of Middle Eastern-American musicians based in Brooklyn, NY. Blending the lines between Persian folk music and country, funk and rock, they revive classic tunes while building new ones.

Hotsy Totsy
Hotsy Totsy started as an a cappella Andrews Sisters tribute trio assembled to accompany a World War II exhibit brought in to the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ in 2001. The girls proved so popular that, what was supposed to be a one month stint, ended up extending through seven. At the close of their final contract, the girls decided they had too good a thing going to let it go; thus, Hotsy Totsy was born.

Fast forward to the present. Hotsy Totsy has expanded beyond the initial Andrews Sisters specialty and found their niche as a reto-pop novelty act. While they still enjoy performing nostalgic hits of days gone by, they now pen original tunes evocative of that golden age, as well as reinvent today's chart toppers to sound reminiscent of yesterday's favorites. They have crafted a signature "Hotsy" sound and style that takes everything that made the girl groups of the 40s, 50s, and 60s so delicious, and makes it relevant in today's music scene.

Hotsy Totsy. More than peachy keen.

Paracutá
Paracutá was formed in 2010 by a group of NYU grad students. Initially performing songs in Spanish and English, the band built a loyal following around New York, playing venues such as The Bitter End, The Bowery Poetry Club, NYU Kimmel Center, Pianos, Spike Hill, and Arlene's Grocery. In 2011 Paracutá was featured on MTV China representing NYC's indie music scene. Not long after, they won the NYU Battle of the Bands and were featured in the 2011 CMJ Music Marathon. Recently they wrote and produced the song "All My Life" for award-winning film, Elliot Loves, featured on HBO and Netflix, as well as 14 original songs for Peruvian film Rocanrol '68 by director Gonzalo Benavente.

Crystal Jurado Music
From a small California town, where the scenery featured tumbleweeds blowing past, Crystal Jurado dreamed of escaping. She found that escape a mere 20 miles away while teaching herself guitar between classes at college. Songwriting and performing helped her crack her shell and she hasn't stopped since. From headlining solo shows to fronting a handful of bands, Crystal has had her way with stages ranging from house parties to legendary venues, and considers every performance an honor to play. Crystal is inspired by Portishead, Anna Calvi and Jeff Buckley, among many other artists spanning all genres. This wide range of influence is evidenced in her musical style, where you will find gutsy songs musing the mysteries of life sidled up alongside dark and sinuous ballads. She has been described as “mainstream enough for a broad audience, funky enough to attract non-conformists; and enough anguish to keep anyone’s attention”. With her unending drive to try every instrument and style out there (Se7en The Musical, anyone???), Crystal is bound to infect audiences with her inventive spirit and captivating songwriting.

Julia Weldon
Light Is a Ghost is the follow up to Brooklyn indie-folk-pop artist Julia Weldon’s 2008 self-titled debut. Produced by Saul MacWilliams (Ingrid Michaelson, Dan Romer) and featuring Adam Christgau (Sia, Tegan and Sara) on drums, the album showcases Weldon’s storytelling, voice, and unmistakable charisma.

Defined by its brash honesty, Light Is a Ghost is an American album in the truest sense. With an emotional resonance bigger than her own experience, Weldon tells the story of both the harsh city edges and limitless, open spaces. The album captures the feel of the open road on a late summer evening, while ruminating on past relationships that creep into that serenity.

Weldon’s album unfurls as an evolving ride through life, family and relationships, complete with the necessary loss, regret, resentment, and debauchery. With her confident guitar playing and Christgau’s propulsive drumming, Light Is a Ghost is as exciting as it is heartfelt.

Classic while being contemporarily resonant, the album’s twelve tracks draw on everything from indie folk to blues rock, dialoguing with current artists like Bon Iver, Iron and Wine, and Cat Power as well as legends like Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith and Suzanne Vega.

A self-taught, nationally touring musician, Julia Weldon’s possessing personality and captivating music crosses bridges and divides. With unfailing fingers, she tells stories that feel both intensely personal and widely universal. Unapologetically herself, Weldon’s songs grab you— asking you to pull up a chair, pour yourself a whiskey, and stay a while.

“New York-based singer-songwriter Julia Weldon might be the most soulful singer you’ve never heard of.” -The Advocate

“One of the primary keys to being a good and successful singer/songwriter is the ability to be honest. Stories, emotional arcs, none of this means a thing if it’s clear the artist is just putting on airs for a given occasion, playing something because it might create a cynically predetermined effect on the audience. None of this ever feels like a problem for Julia Weldon.” -The Washington Times

“On her new record ‘Light Is a Ghost,’ singer-songwriter Julia Weldon acts as… every good dream that’s worth preserving after the alarm clock goes off.” -The Deli NYC

Luca Di Fabio
Luca Di Fabio has a jazz infused soul with the heart of Jeff Buckley.

Seth Morgan
"Somewhere around the intersection of blues, 70's rock, punk, and singer-songwriter.
Bill Michalski

"Seth...has the soul of a man who has seen what is out there on the road. Influenced by everything from jazz and folk to punk and rock, Seth takes it all in and delivers a unique vision of...music."
Gene Frey - Court House Concerts

"The blues are back in Brooklyn. And in a good way. Seth Morgan tells you how it was and how it is again on his debut EP, Gonna Come Down. Too many of us have gotten too comfortable in our musical ways, and it’s good for Seth to come along and remind us what it’s like to give a damn."

Elwood D. Pennypacker, the Sonic Parthenon Show on Thor Radio.

Bad Faces
Somewhere at the crossroads of traditional roots and modern psychedelic music lies Bad Faces; wry and plaintive, weathered but fresh, and all American.

Shannon Pelcher Rao
With nods to Tin Pan Alley, 1960s folk and experimental acoustic, Shannon Pelcher has one foot dipped in the jazz world and the other planted in singer/songwriter storytelling traditions. Her dreamlike lyrics and lilting vocals are backed by elegantly deft guitar playing, and her sound is both vintage and contemporary, influenced as much by John Coltrane as it is by PJ Harvey.

Raye Zaragoza
Raye Zaragoza is a Native-American/Mexican/Taiwanese singer-songwriter who was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. At the age of fourteen, she moved across the country to Los Angeles and has since continuously been on the move touring and sharing her music with people of all walks of life. She has performed in more than fifteen states on the East and West Coasts as well as Mexico and France.

Her obsession with music started as an infant listening to her father’s Mariachi music and at the age of five that obsession magnified into begging for Jewel’s “Pieces of You” album for Christmas. By age eleven, Raye’s iPod was filled with the tunes of Elliott Smith, The Beatles, Queen and Led Zeppelin. Immediately after graduating from high school, Raye moved out of her family’s home and began writing songs as a way to cope with insomnia. She has been voraciously writing songs ever since.

Raye Zaragoza co-wrote a song for the Nickelodeon T.V. series “Wallykazam" and has three songs featured in three feature films, one of which was in the “Top Ten Movies to See” at The Los Angeles Film Festival. Raye made the list of “Top Native American Music of 2013,” headlined at the 2013 LA Skins Music Festival and was a featured artist with FXConnectx Sound Systems at both NAMM 2013 in Anaheim and Summer NAMM 2013 in Nashville.

Her debut EP entitled "Heroine" was recently recorded at Red Bull Studios in New York City with Chris Tabron (credits include Beyoncé, Robin Thicke, Mobb Deep, Vacationer, Natalia Kills…) and will be released on May 11, 2015. The title single “Heroine” has received acclaim across the United States and in the United Kingdom. Also in May, she will be hitting the road for a 2 month tour or the East and West coasts to promote her "Heroine" EP. Subscribe to follow the journey of her emerging career!

Benefit Brunch for Music Mentor Program

Join us for a morning filled with great music and fantastic food as we raise scholarship money for our Music Mentor Program and celebrate the birthday of our Artistic-Executive Director Piruz Partow!

Join us for a morning filled with great music and fantastic food as we raise scholarship money for our Music Mentor Program and celebrate the birthday of our Artistic-Executive Director Piruz Partow! We'll be serving a full brunch with mimosas and coffee while our faculty and Music Mentors entertain you with wonderful songs.

About the Music Mentor Program:
Founded in 2010 by Piruz Partow the Music Mentor Program was built off of the fundamental principles that have driven The Brooklyn Music School for over a century; providing an accessible and affordable performing arts education to the community regardless of income, age, and previous experience. Through the Music Mentor Program BMS has been able to offer subsidized private lessons and ensemble classes to our Music Mentors who in turn assist our teaching artists in our After School and Summer Programs. Working in the classroom, our Music Mentors get hands-on experience from our seasoned, veteran teaching artists learning leadership, musicality, and citizenship skills while at the same time  sharing their passion and knowledge of music with our younger students. In a sense. they mentor the next generation of musicians while being mentored themselves.

Performance in an integral part of the Brooklyn Music School experience, and there is no greater example than our Music Mentor Program. Over the course of the program, mentors join ensembles classes like orchestra and jazz improvisation as well as form rock bands. Under the supervision of our Rock Ban Dept Chair Alex Rivers, the mentors select songs to make a set, rehearse, and ultimately perform live all the while learning responsibility and gaining teamwork skills that last a lifetime. Over the years, the Music Mentor Rock Bands have been a staple at events in the BMS theater and have taken the stage at some of New York's most prestigious venues including the Bell House, Sidewalk Cafe, and Piano's as well as performing at Council Woman Laurie Cumbo's inauguration, Ft. Greene Park and the Children's Museum. This past spring the Music Mentor Program saw an unprecedented achievement when the students got the opportunity to tour and perform in Belgium.

In addition to practicing and performing, academics are a focal point of the Music Mentor Program, all of our mentors are required to maintain a high-grade point average while participating in the program and Piruz Partow has personally worked with every student as they prepare for auditions and college applications.

The continued success of the Music Mentor Program relies on donations from people like you; members of our community who value the arts and the education of our young men and women. We count on this support now more than ever, as the pool of available arts funding shrinks while the dynamic of our neighborhoods change. We invite you to join us in our century-old Ft Greene school house, enjoy a lovingly prepared brunch, and share in the music and community that has brought so many people together building friendships that last a lifetime.
