Introduction to drum set and percussion

Saturdays 2:00-3:00 5/4/2024-6/22/2024

For adult students interested in learning the beginnings of drum set and percussion technique - this 8-week course will introduce students to basic technique, drum rudiments, and basic drum set patterns.

COMMUNITY CHOIR

Wednesdays 7:00-8:30 1/24/2024-5/1/2024

A community group for anyone who enjoys singing and is eager to develop their musicianship skills - previous choral experience is not required! Participants will build sight reading skills, expand their musical vocabulary, and practice healthy vocal technique, all while making a joyful noise with other music-minded community members! This program will culminate with a performance in our historic theater in Fort Greene on Wednesday, May 1. **Please note - this is a tuition-free ensemble with a $50 materials fee.

world percussion ensemble

Mondays 6:30-8:00 1/29/2024-6/24/2024

Open to students of any experience level! Students will learn and develop rhythmic skills in different time signatures, tempos, and feels in a welcoming and supportive environment. Using hand drums such as the djembe and the congas, students will practice a variety of exercises to increase power and dexterity. After gaining solid technique on the drums, students will learn rhythms from the Congo, West Africa, Cuba, Haiti, and Trinidad - all of which will improve rhythmic vocabulary and musicality! 

introduction to music theory II

Saturdays 1:00-2:00 2/3/2024-6/22/2024

For adult musicians who are interested in taking a deeper look into the mechanics of music - This course presents basic music theory using several modules such as ear training, harmony (learning about chords), analyzing song structure (learning about form), and songwriting as a vehicle. Rather than a solely written/academic approach to understanding theory, this class will allow adults to learn music theory while making connections to other musical concepts.

Thursdays 5:30-6:30 1/29/2024-6/13/2024

Moving at an accelerated pace, students will learn the basics of the instrument, including proper posture and technique, while also learning to read musical notation and gaining an understanding of scales and chords. Students will play independently and in groups during the class and will be encouraged to perform as soloists in BMS recitals.

Prerequisite: Adult Group Piano I or equivalent (new students, contact gmeyer@brooklynmusicschool.org to discuss skill level).

Adult orchestra

Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 9/12/2023-6/18/2024

In this ensemble for players with some experience, we will explore classical and contemporary repertoire for orchestra and chamber ensemble. **Registered students, please fill out this form to let us know more about your instrument, musical interests, and experience level!

ADult band series

We’ll match you with fellow adults based on your skill level and musical interests!

BMS Jazz, Rock, Funk, and Motown Ensembles meet for 90-minute weekly rehearsals over the course of a semester or academic year. Each ensemble will create a set list of their own and have opportunities to participate in events such as the NYC Marathon, Atlantic Antic, BMS Beer and Beats Festival, and more.
