Private lessons are matched to each individual's goals and existing playing ability.

The BMS guitar department focus is expanded to include other fretted instruments such as Bass, Electric Bass, Mandolin, Banjo, & Ukulele. We offer lessons of 30 minute, 45 minute and 1 hour durations.

The Brooklyn Music Schools has a performance-based approach to learning. We believe that performing aids in cultivating in our students growth. We excel in providing our students the opportunities to perform in many of our scheduled recitals in the BMS theatre throughout the year as well as the opportunity to perform at unique opportunities around the NYC area.

Students will learn essential guitar techniques, including:

BMS provides students at all ranges of experience to work in a highly tailored, one-on-one environment with world-class drum instructors across a range of musical traditions. Our faculty has trained at the most respected music schools and conservatories in the world and brings a wealth of professional performance experience that informs their teaching and technique. 

Drums are one of the world’s oldest instruments and perhaps the most fundamental. They provide the backbone of the music, attract lots of attention, and the rhythms they provide are one of the defining characteristics of any particular style of music.

At BMS students can learn to play a full range of percussion instruments, including drum set,  claves, congas, marimbatablas, timbales,and  xylophone, Our World Percussion Center of New York specializes in hand-crafted djembe drums from West Africa, and offers instruction in the balaphon, cajon, dundun, and shekere.

Students will learn essential techniques for successful performance, including:

  • Proper grip and hand position
  • Posture at the drum-set
  • Rhythm reading from beginning to advanced
  • Rudiments, rolls, drum-set coordination (Independence)
  • Wide varieties of beats and styles, including jazz, rock, R&B, latin, country, Broadway, world music, etc.
  • Chart reading and Interpretation

Piano

The piano may be the most versatile of all instruments taught at BMS. In addition to its solo repertoire, which spans over four hundred years of music history, the piano is used to accompany singers and appears in ensembles of all sizes and in virtually all styles of music. 

Our accomplished piano faculty consists of highly trained, dedicated and experienced teachers who have experience performing in a variety of styles, including classical, jazz, and rhythm and blues.  Our piano teachers have been educated at some of the most respected conservatories in Europe and America, and share a passion for new learners to musical performance.

The study of piano provides younger students with a solid foundation in music theory and a natural transition to composition. Piano is also and excellent first instrument for students who may later wish to investigate other instruments or to study voice.

BMS offers private piano instruction to children and adults of all levels and abilities. 

Private lessons allow our teachers to tailor their instruction to the needs, abilities, and learning style of the individual student.  

Monthly student recitals, whether in the intimate MacDowell Room setting, or in our 300-seat BMS theater, are open to all students, and provide invaluable performance experience for student pianists.

Violin, viola, cello and bass at the Brooklyn Music School have a long-standing tradition of excellence, and our outstanding strings instructors are comfortable with students of all ages and experience levels.

Students gain a historical overview of the violin, viola, cello or bass while also gaining an appreciation of the instruments' diversity extending beyond the scope of just classical music.

After learning the intricacies of the different parts and maintenance of the instrument, students then learn the proper posture and positioning of the instrument and bow. The basic principals of music theory including notation and rhythmic concepts are then applied to the instrument creating simple pieces that the students eventually perform together and solo.  Intermediate and advanced students take part in the BMS Orchestra as well asconcerts and recitals in the historic BMS theater.

Violin, viola, cello and bass studies at the Brooklyn Music School incorporate many different methods including Sevcik, Wohlfardt, Schroeder and Suzuki.

Voice & Vocal Arts

BMS provides students at all ranges of experience to work in a highly tailored, one-on-one environment with world-class voice educators across a range of musical traditions. Our faculty has trained at the most respected conservatories in the world and bring a wealth of professional performance experience that informs their teaching and technique. 

We believe that the voice is the most intimate and powerful instrument that human beings possess and our pedagogical approach is at once approachable and rigorous. Students are encouraged to master essentials of music theory and ear training as a foundation to excellent musicianship. Performance is an essential part of the vocal and musical arts training at BMS, from intimate recitals to full scale concerts in our 300-seat BMS theater.

Students will learn essential vocal techniques and performance, including:

  • Breath control
  • Maintaining a legato line
  • Diaphragm (its importance, location, accessibility, etc.)
  • Diction
  • Solfège
  • Song interpretation

Wind Instruments

BMS provides students of all age and experience levels with high-quality musical instruction on woodwind and brass instruments including: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, french horntrumpet, and trombone.  Our renowned wind instrument faculty brings their wealth of education from respected musical colleges and conservatories, as well as decades of teaching and professional performance experience, to create a course of study tailored to the student's age and interests while ensuring that essential fundamentals are achieved.

MAKEUP POLICY FOR INDIVIDUAL LESSONS

The Brooklyn Music School reserves the right to terminate any student, who misses THREE (3) consecutive lessons without notification; who has a pattern of absences; or who is consistently tardy.

The Brooklyn Music School does not require a teacher to make up any lessons cancelled by students. All missed lessons due to the teacher's absence, if substitute teacher is not available, will be made up. Payments MUST be made for all missed lessons. There is NO refund for classes missed because of a student absence.

As a courtesy to the teacher, we ask you call the school in advance when a student will be absent. ONE excused absence, for which the teacher or BMS has been notified 24 hours in advance, is allowed per quarter and will be made up by the teacher during the designated make up week (See Calendar). An unexcused absence is one in which the school has not been given 24 hours' notice WILL NOT be made up.
