Piruz Partow
Born in Philadelphia, Piruz started studying violin from acclaimed Romanian violinist Dolly Koritzer at age 5. After ten years of violin, Piruz studied voice and music theory with Philadelphia Orchestra organist Michael Stairs. While studying at Hobart College, Piruz found his mark on the electric and upright bass through the tutelage of Pulitzer Prize Composer and Dorsey Band bassist, Nicholas V. D’Angelo. During this time, Piruz developed his skills with Berklee College Professor Jim Stinnett. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory at Hobart, he furthered his education at the Ithaca College of Music. There, Piruz started a long association with Wynton Kelly and Henry “Red” Allen drummer, George Reed.
In 2000 Piruz left Ithaca and returned home to Philadelphia where he completed a Masters in Music at the University of the Arts. While living in Philadelphia, Piruz was able to play with such jazz icons as Ronnie Burrage (Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter), Byron Landam (Pat Martino, Joey DeFrancesco) and Edgar Bateman (John Coltrane).
Europe was the next destination for Piruz. After several successful tours with his own jazz band, which included pianist Etienne Richard and drummer Yves Peeters, Piruz was hired by the Bruoscella Orchestra in Brussels, Belgium as their principal bassist.
Now living in New York City Piruz has started to become a constant figure on the music scene. He can now be spotted either backing up R&B singers in the Village or playing free jazz downtown. Piruz has gigged in some of the major rooms in New York City such as Irving Plaza, Fez, The Cutting Room, Spa, The Village Underground, and Tonic. Piruz has now chosen to share his experiences with students as a faculty member at the Brooklyn School of Music and the Music School of Long Island.
