Private Lessons

BMS provides students of all ages and levels of experience the chance to work in a highly tailored, one-on-one environment. Lessons are available for guitar, drums, strings, voice, wind instruments and more, from world class instructors across a range of musical traditions. We strongly recommend that children start private lessons at age 5.

Our faculty has trained at the most respected music schools and conservatories in the world and brings a wealth of professional performance experience that informs their teaching and technique. Private lessons allow our teachers to tailor their instruction to the needs, abilities, and learning style of the individual student.  

BMS has a performance-based approach to learning. We believe that performing aids in cultivating in our students growth. We excel in providing our students the opportunities to perform in many of our scheduled recitals in the BMS theatre throughout the year as well as a variety of unique performance opportunities around the NYC area.

The first lesson is paid up-front, with no commitment to enroll for the term.  It is designed to be an introduction between the teacher and student. 

If the student feels it is a good fit, we ask that the student commits to weekly lessons for the Academic Year: September 2023 - June 2024.

Piano is an excellent first instrument, and provides a starting point for students who may wish to later study other instruments or voice.

The BMS guitar department focus is expanded to include other fretted instruments such as Bass, Electric Bass, Mandolin, Banjo, and Ukulele.

At BMS students can learn to play a full range of percussion instruments, including drum set, claves, congas, marimba, tablas, timbales, xylophone, djembe, the balaphon, cajon, dundun, and shekere.

BMS provides students of all age and experience levels with high-quality musical instruction on woodwind and brass instruments including: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, and trombone.

Adaptive Instruction

Adaptive Instruction caters private instrumental and vocal lessons, group classes, and special sessions, to meet the challenges and abilities of our students and community members. These services reach a broad range of clients, with programming that promotes holistic approaches to mind-body expression through music.

As an added bonus, private lesson tuition also includes enrollment into one 60 minute ensemble related to your instrument and area of study, and access to perform in BMS recitals! Some exceptions may apply - please contact the registration team with any questions. Subject to instructor approval.

FALL 2023 Private Lesson Pricing

  • 30 minutes: $65.00

  • 45 minutes: $75.00

  • 60 minutes: $89.00

MAKE-UP LESSONS 

Instructor Absences:  

All lessons that are canceled by the Instructor will be made up. Students also have the option of working with a substitute instructor. Payments MUST be made for all missed lessons. No refunds are issued for Instructor Absences.  

Student Absences: 

As a courtesy to the instructor, we require 24 hours advance notice for excused absences. The instructor and Registrar Team should be contacted to ensure that all appropriate parties are notified. THREE (3) excused absences are permitted for the entire Academic Year. The instructor and student will coordinate a day and time for excused absences to be made up. Instructors will do their best to accommodate make-up lessons for any more than three excused absences, but BMS cannot guarantee instructor availability. In this event, students can request a substitute instructor.

If less than 24 hours advance notice is given before an absence, the student will be considered unexcused, and the lesson will be forfeit. In cases of last minute emergencies or illnesses, a make-up can be given at the instructor's discretion.

No refunds are issued for Student Absences, either excused or unexcused.

BMS SCHOOL POLICY

The Brooklyn Music School reserves the right to discontinue the enrollment of any student who:

  • misses THREE (3) consecutive lessons without notifying the instructor, or the Registrar Team,

  • has a pattern of absences,

  • is consistently tardy,

  • is disrespectful of other BMS students and/or BMS Faculty and Staff.

Returning Students

If you are a returning private lesson student looking to register for Fall 2023, you will not need to submit another lesson inquiry form! To re-register, please call or email our registrar team with your registration number and email address.
